Essential Seed Starting Supplies for Success
Starting seeds indoors is a rewarding way to jumpstart your garden season. However, having the right gear makes the difference between leggy, weak sprouts and robust seedlings ready to thrive. Here is the essential checklist of supplies you need.
You don't need a professional greenhouse to start seeds, but you do need to mimic nature's best conditions: warmth, moisture, and light. Let's look at the toolkit that will get you there.
The Seeds
It starts here! Source high-quality seeds from reputable companies. Check the dates on the packets; while many seeds remain viable for years, fresh seeds have the highest germination rates.
Seed Starting Mix
Crucial Rule: Do not use garden soil or heavy potting soil. These are too dense for delicate baby roots and may harbor pathogens.
Use a sterile, soilless seed starting mix. It's usually made of peat moss (or coco coir) and perlite. It's light, fluffy, and holds moisture well while allowing plenty of air to the roots.
Trays and Cells
You have options ranging from standard 1020 trays with 6-cell inserts to heavy-duty, reusable silicone seed trays (like Epic Trays). The advantage of rigid, high-quality trays is they last for a lifetime and don't crack when you carry them.
Ensure whatever container you use has drainage holes. You'll also need a solid bottom tray to catch water, enabling you to water from the bottom up, which prevents soil disturbance and fungal issues.
Grow Lights
A sunny window is rarely enough for modern vegetable startings. Seedlings need intense light to stay short and stocky.
Invest in LED grow lights or high-output T5 fluorescents. Keep the lights close—about 2-4 inches above the tops of the seedlings—to prevent them from stretching and becoming "leggy."
Heat Mats
Peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants love warmth. A seedling heat mat raises the soil temperature 10-20°F above ambient room temp.
This speeds up germination significantly. Once the seeds sprout, you generally remove the heat source so they don't grow too fast and spindly, but for that initial pop, heat is magic.
